How to Plant Lavender in Texas

Texas has a diverse set of growing regions that are suitable for a variety of different lavender plants. In the cooler regions of Texas, in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 8, English lavender is the thing to grow. In the hotter regions of zones 9A and 9B, heat-tolerant Spanish lavender is the best choice. Lavender is a fragrant, drought-tolerant herb. Lavender requires a sunny location with good drainage. Plant this fragrant herb as a border along a pathway or en masse in the garden or landscape.

  Plant lavender in Texas during the cool fall or spring weather. In mild, frost-free areas of Texas, plant lavender any time between late fall and early spring.

  Amend the soil in the planting bed. Spread a 2-inch layer of compost, potting soil, leaf mold or rotted leaves over the planting area. Work the material 12 to 18 inches deep into the soil.

  Determine the planting site for each lavender plant in your Texas garden. Space both English and Spanish lavender 18 to 24 inches apart to give the plants room to develop.

  Dig a planting hole in the center of one of the planting locations. Use a trowel or small shovel to make the hole just slightly larger and the same depth as the nursery pot your lavender start is in.

  Remove the lavender root ball from the nursery pot by holding the base of the plant in one hand and, turning over the pot, gently squeezing and working the pot off the roots.

  Put the lavender plant upright in the hole with the base of the plant at the same level as the garden soil. Push more soil around the root ball to fill in the planting hole and press the area down gently with the flat of your hand. Continue planting until all the starts are in the ground.

  Water the newly planted lavender the same day you plant. Soak the garden soil around each plant until it is damp 6 to 8 inches deep.
