How to Make Goat Milk Shampoo & Conditioners at Home

Shampoos and conditioners are readily available at almost any supermarket, pharmacy or beauty supply store. While store-bought shampoos generally keep hair clean, they often contain chemicals and toxins that are absorbed into the skin, not to mention washed into the water system, which may contaminate the very water that comes out of the faucet. Safe, homemade shampoos and conditioners can be made with goat's milk and a handful of other safe ingredients.

Things You'll Need

  • Saucepan
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 tbsp. fresh herbs
  • Strainer
  • Large bowl
  • 4 tbsp. soap flakes
  • 2 cups goat milk
  • ½ cup olive oil

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 2 cups of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil on the stove at high heat.

    • 2

Add 3 tbsp. of fresh herbs to the boiling water. Herbs with strong scents work best, such as lavender, rosemary or sage. Reduce the heat to a simmer and allow the natural oils from the herbs to infuse for 10 minutes. Do not put a lid on the pan as the water level should reduce during this process.

    • 3

Pour the water through a strainer and into a large bowl. Discard the herbs.

    • 4

Add 4 tbsp. of pure, unscented soap flakes to the warm water. Stir the water until the soap flakes melt. The mixture should thicken to a consistency slightly thicker than shampoo.

    • 5

Add 2 cups of goat's milk to the mixture and stir it until thoroughly combined. Store the shampoo in a dark container and keep it refrigerated when not in use.

    • 6

Add ½ cup of olive oil to the recipe to make it a conditioner. Olive oil can naturally moisturize and condition the hair and scalp.
