Select a planting location for the dill spice. The location should receive full sun, which is between 6 and 8 hours each day. The site needs to have well-draining soil and wind protection, since dill can blow over easily. The location should be permanent, since dill does not normally survive transplanting.
Dig holes for the dill seeds with a hand spade. Make the holes 1/4-inch deep and at least 10 inches apart. If you have more than one row of dill, make the rows 2 feet apart. Lower one seed into each hole and firm the soil over the seeds with your hands. Water until the soil settles.
Apply one application of 5-10-5 fertilizer to the soil around the dill in the late spring. Follow the package directions for application instructions. Apply 3 oz. of fertilizer for every 10 feet of dill row you planted.
Continue watering the soil frequently enough to keep it moist to the touch. Pull up any weeds that appear in the dill rows to prevent competition for water and soil nutrients.
