Essential Oils for Homemade Deodorant Spray

Essential oils that possess anti-bacterial properties are often used to create a freshening and deodorizing spray. Sweet marjoram, lemon thyme, rosemary, basil and lavender inhibit odors and present a crisp, clean herbaceous scent. Experiment with blends of oils to find a favorite combination of scents to cleanse the air and remove odors naturally.
  1. Cedar

    • The scent of fir stimulates the senses and helps focus concentration.

Cedrus atlantica "red cedar" has a pungent, woody and crisp herbaceous scent. The fragrant evergreen repels moths, ticks and bedbugs while refreshing the air, and removes odors and mildew. Mix 20 to 30 drops of cedar essential oil with 3 oz. of water and 3 oz. of vinegar. Place in a spray bottle and mist draperies, carpets and upholstered furniture to deodorize and freshen fabrics.

    Clary Sage

    • The scent of clary sage is refreshing and invigorating.

Salvia sclarea "Clary sage" presents a crisp, refreshing scent that blends well with lemon, chamomile, balsam, fir, lemongrass and grapefruit essential oils. Add 6 to 10 drops of a combination of favorite essential oils, 3 tbsp. of baking soda and 1 cup of water. Place in a spray bottle and shake well before use. Spray on underarms for an effective deodorant that is safe for sensitive skin and neutralizes body odors.

    Eucalyptus

    • Place sprigs of eucalyptus, freshened with oil, in closets and cupboards.

Eucalyptus radiata is a member of the plant family Myrtaceae, which includes myrtle trees and shrubs. Valued for its antibacterial, anti-viral and insect repelling qualities, it is a useful addition to a household disinfectant and deodorizing spray. Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, add 30 to 40 drops of therapeutic grade, pure and natural essential oil, shake and spray to freshen stuffy closed-off areas, basements and attics. The crisp, herbaceous scent freshens the air and repels spiders and other troublesome insects.

    Lemongrass

    • Cymbopogon pendulus "lemongrass" has the scent of fresh cut hay, crisp and green. Mix 1/4 cup organic dishwashing liquid, 1 cup white vinegar, 1/2 cup water and 30 drops of lemongrass essential oil in a spray bottle. Spray on counter tops, appliances, plumbing fixtures and hard surfaces. Wipe and polish with a damp cloth. Surfaces sparkle and the air is scented with a delightful fragrance.
