How to Plant Jasmine Seeds

Jasmine is a perennial vine with white flowers that bloom in the summer and fall. The plant has brown to black berries, which house the individual seeds of the plant. It is a hardy plant that requires little maintenance but must receive at least six hours of bright, indirect light each day. Jasmine makes an excellent indoor plant when placed near windows to grow. It has fragrant flowers that work well when grown against a garden trellis or garden arbor.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the jasmine berries in late summer and early fall when they begin to split. Pull the berries from the vine and pick up the berries that have already fallen.

    • 2

Remove the fruit from each berry with a small scrub brush or gently cut away the fruit using a sharp paring knife. Clean all of the fruit away from each seed.

    • 3

Score a small section of each berry seed coating. Use a knife to cut a small notch approximately 1/4 of an inch on the side of each seed.

    • 4

Soak the seeds overnight in a bowl filled with tap water. This will help aid in seed germination. Remove any seeds that are floating and drain the others.

    • 5

Fill nursery pots three quarters of the way full of mixture of potting mix and organic compost. Choose pots with drainage holes in the bottom.

    • 6

Place two seeds 1/2 inch deep into the potting mix in each pot This will ensure at least one successful plant in each nursery pot.

    • 7

Set the pots in a location that gets bright indirect light. Temperatures should consistently remain around 70 to 80 degrees F.

    • 8

Water with an inch of water every other day or in order to keep the soil moist. Place the nursery pots on a small tray that can catch the water that drains. This allows the plants to self water.

    • 9

Transplant your jasmine plants into large 10-inch containers or into their permanent place in the garden when they have reached at least 4 inches tall. Dig a hole as deep and as wide as the nursery pot and place the plant into the hole. Fill the hole with native soil or a good potting mix.

    • 10

Provide plants with a wooden support or plant them next to a garden trellis or fence for support.

    • 11

Add 1/4 cup of 10-10-5 fertilizer to each jasmine plant every four months. Use a slow-release fertilizer to prevent burn.

    • 12

Prune off all dead and diseased branches in late fall after all the blooms have fallen. Cut new growth by 50 percent to help the plant regenerate in the spring.
