How to Use Sage to Clear My House

Sage is most commonly used as a culinary spice. But, in addition to being delicious, sage has many uses. Native Americans traditionally burned white sage (Salvia apiana) leaves to purge sickness and negativity. Now their use of sage is largely ceremonial. However, holistic health practitioners have picked up the practice. Many burn sage to clear homes of negative energy after an argument, unpleasant visitor or other distressing event .

Instructions

    • 1

Close the doors and windows, and turn off any fans or central air system.

    • 2

Light the tip of a smudge stick, the end furthest away from the cords that bind it. Let it burn for a few minutes then blow it out. The tips of the sage stick will continue to smolder.

    • 3

Set the smudge stick down on a heat-resistant plate. Abalone is the traditional receptacle; however, fired pottery and pyrex work just as well. Wait for the smoke to build.

    • 4

Carry the smudge stick with its plate around your home. Wave the smudge stick around each room. Trace the stick around the doorways, the four top and bottom corners and the center of the room. You can also say a positive affirmation or think positive thoughts as you move throughout the house. Homeopath Eileen Nauman advises that you follow the smoke; the smudge stick will emit thicker smoke in the areas that need attention. Hold the sage stick in those areas for a few moments before moving on.

Stub the stick out on the plate once you're done or you can leave it burning. Eileen Nauman notes that the common practice is to allow the smudge stick to burn on its own until it dissipates all of the negative energy and puts itself out.
