How to Grow Carrots in a Pot

Growing carrots in a pot allows people with little or no room for a vegetable garden to enjoy their delicious fresh-picked flavor. It is also way to get kids involved in gardening. Additionally, carrots grown in the ground are often disfigured or stunted because of poor soil conditions, weeds and pests. Grow carrots in a pot on a balcony or in your backyard in composted soil. Provide them with adequate water and fertilizer and enjoy a bountiful harvest.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the pot with peat, add vermiculite to retain moisture and add a vegetable fertilizer.

    • 2

Create 1/2-inch-deep rows, spacing the rows about 2 1/2 inches apart. Refer to your particular seed variety for the spacing between the rows. Round varieties will need more space than narrow ones.

    • 3

Spread the seeds thinly along each row, cover with a fine layer of soil and water with a fine hose sprayer or watering can. Allow about a week for the seeds to start germinating, keeping them evenly moist at all times.

    • 4

Thin the seedlings when they are an inch tall. Gently pull out the seedlings or cut them at the surface, leaving at least 1/2ninch between each seedling, again depending on the variety.

    • 5

Add some additional peat to cover the surface of the growing carrots as the soil settles around them. This will prevent the top of the carrots from turning green.

    • 6

Apply liquid fertilizer weekly once the carrots have established greens that are a few inches tall.

    • 7

Thin the carrots again when they are 6 to 8 inches tall. Space them an inch apart. The thinned carrots are edible at this stage.
