How to Transplant a Bhut Jolokia

Bhut jolokia is believed to be one of the hottest chili peppers on earth. The plants are not readily available in most nurseries and are usually started indoors by home gardeners. They also require warm temperatures and a long growing season, making it difficult to grow them in areas with cool fall and winter temperatures. Provide bhut jolokia plants with gradual exposure to outdoor conditions before adding them to the garden. Transplant to a full or partial sun location with excellent drainage after temperatures rise in spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the bhut jolokia plants in a partly sunny location protected from strong wind gusts. Allow them to remain there for about 30 minutes and then bring them back inside.

    • 2

Repeat this process each day, unless heavy rainfall is expected. Gradually increase the amount of time the plants spend outdoors by 15 to 30 minutes each day for the next two weeks. Also reposition the containers so that they are exposed to a bit more sunlight each day.

    • 3

Monitor the moisture level in the soil carefully, as bhut jolokia plants that spend time outdoors tend to dry quickly.

    • 4

Leave the plants outside for an entire day and night just before transplanting.

    • 5

Dig a hole two times the diameter and 1 inch deeper than the container the bhut jolokia pepper plants are growing in.

    • 6

Mix one spadeful of organic compost and one spadeful of sand with the loose soil, which improves air flow and drainage.

    • 7

Place the root system into the hole carefully and fill in around it with the amended soil.

    • 8

Water as soon as planting is complete.

    • 9

Check the soil often and water when the top inch feels dry. Keep in mind that bhut jolokia plants require more moisture when temperatures are very high.
