How to Make a Cucumber Trellis With Lattice

Cucumber plants produce their fruits on long vines. In traditional garden beds, these vines are left to spread over the ground, where they take up valuable garden space. Growing the cucumbers on a trellis saves space in the bed while also elevating the cucumbers above the soil. Trellised plants produce straighter cucumbers that are easier to slice or pickle whole. Manufactured lattice panels, either wood or vinyl, provide the main element of a simple trellis.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three 2-inch by 2-inch boards to a 5-foot length, using a handsaw or circular saw. These two boards become the stakes that support the cucumber trellis.

    • 2

Install two of the stakes at either end of the cucumber row, spacing them 8 feet apart. Install the third stake between the two at either end. Push the bottom foot of each stake into the soil to ensure they are well-anchored and won't fall over under the weight of the plants.

    • 3

Lean a 4-foot by 8-foot sheet of lattice board against the stakes. Line up the ends of the lattice with the stakes at either end of the row.

    • 4

Secure the lattice to the three stakes. Nail the lattice to the stakes, or tie the board to the stakes with plastic zip-ties or twine.

    • 5

Plant the cucumbers at the base of the lattice trellis. Guide the plants onto the lattice once the vines reach 8 to 12 inches long. Tie the vines loosely to the trellis with plant ties. Continue tying the vines for every 6 to 8 inches of new growth until the cucumbers begin to twine around and grow up the trellis on their own.
