How to Fertilize Silver Queen Sweet Corn

Silver Queen is a white sweet corn variety that's ready to harvest about 92 days after planting. It is noted for its resistance to common corn diseases, including bacterial wilt, and is an excellent choice for the home garden, according to the University of Illinois Extension. Like other sweet corns, Silver Queen benefits from fertilizing and produces a higher yield if fertilized correctly. Excluding a soil test from a laboratory -- which reveals specific fertilizer needs for your soil bed -- some general guidelines or rules of thumb can be applied when fertilizing Silver Queen corn.

Instructions

    • 1

Fertilize the planting bed before you plant your Silver Queen corn. Apply about 3 lbs. of 5-10-10 fertilizer for every 100 square feet, according to Clemson Cooperative Extension.

    • 2

Wait until the Silver Queen corn reaches 12 to 18 inches, or about four weeks after planting, and then start feeding the corn monthly until harvest time with a fertilizer high in nitrogen.

    • 3

Apply 1 lb. of nitrogen for every 50 feet of row. If your soil is sandy, plan to fertilize the corn every two to three weeks. Sprinkle the fertilizer evenly around each Silver Queen plant, staying six to eight inches from the stems, and water it in afterward. These "side dressings" are essential for optimum growth since corn needs a lot of nitrogen to grow well.
