How to Build a Cucumber Frame

Cucumbers of all sizes are commonly found in many home gardens. Often used for pickling or slicing for salads, they usually require a large space for growing. However, the vining types can be trained to grow vertically on a frame or trellis. Vertical growing not only takes up less space, but can also increase the number of cucumbers the plant produces, improve air circulation and reduce the chance of diseases developing. You can buy a trellis for your cucumbers at your local gardening store, but they're easy and inexpensive to make.

Instructions

    • 1

Pound the two steel reinforcing rods, also called rebar, into the ground, so that about 1 foot of each rod is above the ground. Place the rods 4 feet apart.

    • 2

Place one connector at the top of each of the 6-foot steel pipes. Turn the connectors so that the open ends face each other.

    • 3

Place the 4-foot pipe into the open ends of the connectors to form a rectangular-shaped frame.

    • 4

Slip the bottom ends of the frame over the rebar. Push the frame into the ground about 2 inches deep.

    • 5

Stretch nylon netting across the whole frame and tie it to the pipes.
