How to Grow Garlic in Indoor Containers

Enjoy the year-round flavor of fresh garlic when you grow it indoors. A sunny window and a small container filled with potting soil are the most important materials necessary to grow garlic in indoor containers. With a little time and the right conditions, the garlic plants will soon grow tall enough to harvest the flavorful bulbs from under the potting soil.

Things You'll Need

  • Gravel
  • 1 container with drainage holes for each garlic plant (8 inches deep and at least 6 inches wide)
  • Potting soil
  • Garlic bulb
  • All-purpose fertilizer (water-soluble)

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the containers with approximately 1 inch of gravel to aid in drainage. Fill the containers to the top with potting soil.

    • 2

Pull apart the cloves making up the garlic bulb and select the largest bulbs for planting.

    • 3

Plant a garlic clove in the center of each container with the pointed end facing up and the flat end facing down. Push the clove down into the potting soil to make it about 1 1/2 inches below the surface of the soil and tamp the soil down firmly above the clove.

    • 4

Water the potting soil evenly after planting the garlic clove and place the container in a sunny window. Keep the soil evenly moist.

    • 5

Fertilize the garlic plant twice each month by mixing the fertilizer with water according to package recommendations. Pour the fertilizer carefully over the soil.

    • 6

Harvest the garlic when the foliage turns yellow approximately four to six months after planting the cloves. Gently lift the garlic bulb from the soil by grasping the leaves and pulling straight up.
