How to Grow Miniature Lettuce Indoors

Few things are as satisfying as being able to grow your own salad right in your own window. Miniature lettuce is appealing to eat and often less bitter than it's larger-sized counterparts. With a few seeds, some soil and almost any container, you can have a salad every day without ever running to the store. Lettuce grown in a window is also an attractive addition to your indoor landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your planter or pot with a standard potting mix. Mix in well-aged compost to increase the fertility of the soil.

    • 2

Sprinkle your lettuce seeds over your soil and cover with about a 1/2-inch of additional potting soil. A mesclun or farmers' market blend will give you an excellent selection of baby or miniature lettuces from which to pick.

    • 3

Place your container in a window that gets some, but not too much, sun. Full sun all day can be harsh to lettuce and encourage it to bolt early.

    • 4

Water the seeds thoroughly after planting and then at least every couple of days until the seeds germinate. It's important to water lettuce in containers more frequently since it is subject to drying from both the top and the sides of the container.

    • 5

Thin your seedlings to about an inch apart as they grow. These thinned out seedlings can also be eaten.

    • 6

Harvest your lettuce leaves at whatever height you like. In order to encourage more growth, don't pull the leaves from the roots, but rather use scissors to cut the leaves at the base. More will grow in their place.
