How to Plant Beets in Texas

Texas is a large state with winters ranging in USDA hardiness zones between 6 and 11. Coastal regions can plant crops, such as beets year-round, making the most of the mild weather. However, the farther north areas will need to wait until spring and summer to plant beets. Thankfully, beets are a fast crop ready for harvest after just 30 to 60 days. For fall planting, put the beets in the ground eight to 10 weeks before the first frost.

Instructions

    • 1

Amend your garden soil with 2 inches of compost and till it into the top 6 inches of the soil.

    • 2

Plant your beet seeds 1 inch in the ground and lightly cover with topsoil. Space your rows 14 inches apart.

    • 3

Water the rows and keep the ground moist until the beet greens emerge. After that you can reduce your watering to once a day or whenever the top of the soil dries out.

    • 4

Thin your plants to 2 inches apart as they emerge so that you'll have large beets when you harvest.

    • 5

Weed the rows as you see weeds emerge to prevent nutrient loss in the soil.

    • 6

Harvest your beets once the greens reach 1 1/2 feet high.
