How to Grow Veggies Inside Your Home

Growing vegetables inside your home is an ideal way to garden no matter how much time you have to devote to the task. Indoor gardens require no weeding and often grow faster or healthier than their outdoor counterparts because they are not bothered by pests or adverse weather conditions such as wind or hail. They will not receive rain, however, so you must water them frequently. If you are limited in your space, you may also be limited in the types and amount of vegetables that you can grow, but these difficulties can often be remedied.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill small drainage holes about 1 inch from the bottom of your pots. Place a plastic tray or baking sheet under your pots to prevent water from spilling in your home.

    • 2

Fill your pots and planters with 1 to 2 inches of small stones or gravel to enhance drainage, particularly if your pot is deep. Fill the pot to within 2 inches of the top with potting soil.

    • 3

Add well-aged compost to your soil to enhance the soil's fertility.

    • 4

Plant your vegetable seeds in the pots as you would in the ground outside according to the directions on the back of the seed packet.

    • 5

Cover your seeds with the recommended amount of soil. Water thoroughly.

    • 6

Water your seeds more frequently than you would if they were planted in the ground, as container plants are exposed on all sides and dry out faster.

    • 7

Place a stake in vine plants, such as tomatoes, to help them grow tall and keep them from breaking.

    • 8

Locate your pots and planters according to their sun and shade requirements. Most vegetables require at least several hours of sun every day.
