Plant cabbage seeds in the soil after the last frost in spring. The seeds should be planted at a depth of 1/4 to 1/2 inches.
Place a lightweight row cover over cabbage seedlings. Pin down the cover with plastic spikes. The cover protects the seedlings from worms, aphids and other pests that can kill or otherwise damage new cabbage crops.
Transplant any small cabbage plants after 4 to 6 weeks of growth into fresh soil in rows 32 to 36 inches apart. Separate each cabbage plant transplant at a space of 15 to 18 inches. Saturate the root ball of the cabbage plant with a starter fertilizer before planting it in the fresh soil.
Plant any cabbage plant transplants or new seeds in a soil mixed with compost. Apply fertilizer to the cabbage crop each month, based on the fertilizer manufacturer's instructions. Use a garden hose to water your cabbage rows on a daily basis.
Check your soil temperature. Cabbage germinates best in the 70 to 80 degree Fahrenheit range. In many areas, start seeds indoors in this temperature range to get a start on the growing season.
