How to Build a Zucchini Trellis

Zucchini is a form of vining summer squash that can grow quickly and take over your garden space. The foliage of zucchini plants is heavy and can easily topple a regular lattice or tomato cage trellis. The solution is to create a trellis out of materials that are strong enough to hold the foliage. Hog panels, also known as cattle panels, are wire mesh livestock enclosures that make effective and sturdy trellises.

Instructions

Take the hog panel to a home improvement store for cutting. They come in long pieces that are 4 feet tall, so have the store cut it down to the length you need for your garden.

Insert fence posts on either side of the zucchini area of your garden. Use post hole diggers to dig the holes at a depth of 2 feet, then lower the posts into the holes. Firm the soil around the base of the posts.

Place the hog panel in the space between the two posts. Secure the panel to the metal posts by slipping zip ties through the panel mesh and around the posts. Place one tie every six inches.

Plant the zucchini at the base of the trellis. As the plant grows, wrap the vines around the lowest rung of the hog paneling. The vines will then grow up the trellis.
