How to Build a Cucumber Trellis Using Netting

Cucumbers are a common addition to a vegetable garden because they are easy to grow. The plants are a vining species, so they can take up a lot of space in your garden, but you can control their growth with a trellis. Growing cucumber plants on a trellis also keeps the cucumbers off the ground so they do not rot. Trellis netting is a gardening netting material that is resistant to the elements and has large holes so you can reach through either side when harvesting.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig 2-foot-deep holes using a post hole digger seven feet apart in the cucumber planting area. Lower one 1-by-1-inch piece of lumber into each hole and fill the holes with soil.

    • 2

Spread the netting out between the two posts on the ground, then lift up one side at a time and weave the top of the post through the holes in the side of the netting. Repeat with the other side.

    • 3

Weave the third piece of lumber through the holes on the top of the netting. The netting will then be secured to all three posts without having to tie it to anything.

    • 4

Rest the top post on the other two posts. Secure it in place by hammering a nail through the top of the post and into the post below it.

    • 5

Insert a tent stake into the ground every 12 inches. Wrap the bottom edge of the netting around the tent stake loops to secure the bottom edge.
