Squash plants need to grow in hills so their roots stay warm and they have plenty of aerated soil and nutrients to grow. These hills need plenty of space between them because squash are vine plants that will spread out and crawl across the ground. Consider the type and variety of squash that you are growing before you start. Small, decorative squash will have much different needs than large, prize-winning pumpkins. Pumpkin, zucchini and acorn squash are a few of the many types of squash grown in the home garden.
Instructions

1
Gather soil using a hoe to form a mound that is up to 10 inches high and about 1 foot wide.
-
2
Push four or five seeds into the sides of the hill, leaving 5 inches between each seed.

3
Build another hill 4 to 8 feet from the first one, depending on the squash variety. Large squash need more room to grow. Continue building and planting in this manner until you have the desired number of hills.

Thin the hills when each seedling has two or three leaves. Leave two or three healthy seedlings and pull the others.
