How to Harvest Butterhead Lettuce

Butterhead lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is a group of lettuce plants that produce small heads the weigh approximately 4 to 8 ounces each. The leaves are soft, loose, tender and sweet. Each head is enough for a typical dinner salad recipe for one. Harvest butterheads when they reach a mature size, which occurs about 60 to 70 days after planting. Instructions

    • 1

Pull off the outer leaves for harvest. The inner leaves continue growing. The whole plant may then be harvested in a week or two.

    • 2

Dig butterhead lettuce up from the ground with a trowel. This saves you time later when cleaning up your garden. If you harvest every other plant, the remaining lettuce plants growing in a tight grow a bit bigger.

    • 3

Cut butterhead lettuce plants to the ground with a sharp knife. If you harvest every other plant, the other plants have more space to grow.
