How to Grow Baby Carrots as a Houseplant

Carrots are hardy root crops in home gardens, and last through both frost and heat. As root crops, though, they can fall prey to pests, diseases and rotting, and require consistent maintenance. Grow your carrot crops indoors in pots to eliminate the possibility of rotting and pest invasions. Choose small baby or round carrots for small, compact growth in pots and containers, and enjoy both the frilled, decorative foliage and eventual harvest.

Instructions

    • 1

Start indoor carrots in late winter and early spring for quick harvests, and repeat your plantings as required for a continuous harvest. Use 6- to 10-inch-tall pots and containers with equal diameters for baby carrots, which reach only 4 to 5 inches in height. Use pots with drainage holes to keep the carrots out of standing water, which causes rot.

    • 2

Fill each pot to within 1/2 inch of the top with a soil-based or soil-less potting foundation. Carrots thrive in potting soil, which contains organic matter for moisture retention. Don't use heavy clay or fill dirt, as it will restrict carrot growth. Turn 5-10-10 granular fertilizer into the soil for slow-release nutrition.

    • 3

Plant baby carrot seeds 1/4 inch deep at every 1 to 2 inches in the pots. Put the pots in sites with full to partial sun and good air movement, or full artificial light. Carrots do best at temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees F.

    • 4

Water carrots with 2 inches of water every three days and watch for soil drying. Carrots need consistent moisture and may dry more quickly in the dry air of the house. Thin the seedlings to every 3 to 4 inches in the pots when they sprout, to give each carrot more room for growth.

    • 5

Harvest the baby carrots when they reach 1/2 inch around and 2 to 3 inches in length, or leave them to grow to full maturity. Baby carrots mature in 52 to 68 days, depending on cultivar.
