How to Grow Dragon Carrots

Known for their deep purple color, dragon carrots are popular throughout farmers’ markets across the United States. Bred by John Navazio, these carrots boast a taste that is both spicy and sweet. Orange on the inside and reddish-purple on the outside, dragon carrots are also fairly easy to grow.

Instructions

    • 1

Sow your dragon carrot seeds roughly three to four weeks before the final spring frost. Alternatively, you can begin planting the dragon carrot seeds as soon as the soil can be easily worked.

    • 2

Use rich organic matter when planting your dragon carrots. While fertilizer is not neccesary, you can lightly sprinkle a slow-acting granular around the plants in the spring if you prefer.

    • 3

Position the seeds in an area that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.

    • 4

Plant the seeds ¼ inch deep and ½ inch apart from one another. If planting the dragon carrot seeds in rows, make sure the rows are separated between 16 and 24 inches.

    • 5

Tamp the soil after planting the seeds with your hands and water the area often so the soil is moist but not waterlogged.

    • 6

Wait between 65 and 75 days for the dragon carrots to reach full maturity. The plants will be roughly 4 to 8 inches above ground and 3 inches wide.
