How to Harvest Baby Spinach

Spinach is a cool season crop that is planted in the spring or fall, depending on the climate. If you want to grow baby spinach in your home garden, note that it is not a special variety. Baby spinach is simply the name give to spinach leaves that were harvested when they were small and immature, but still of a usable size. They require less space to grow and are often an excellent crop for a small garden.

Examine the spinach heads beginning about two weeks after planting. Spinach is often ready to harvest as baby spinach starting at this time.

Harvest the outer spinach leaves that are approximately 1 to 2 inches long. Pinch the leaves off with your fingers or cut them off with a pair of garden clippers. Do not remove the inner leaves. They will continue to grow and you may get two or three more baby spinach harvests out of each plant.

Harvest baby spinach leaves as needed. Check on the plants every three to four days so the plants do not grow too large for your liking. You can, however, allow the spinach plants grow to maturity to harvest them then, if desired.
