How to Grow a Howdy Doody Pumpkins From Seed

Pumpkins signify fall in the U.S. as they are used for both Halloween and Thanksgiving. Native to Central America, pumpkins have been grown in North America since before Europeans arrived. The "Howdy Doody" pumpkin is a medium to large pumpkin that needs about 90 to 95 days for the fruit to reach maturity. This variety of pumpkin is an ornamental gourd with restricted vines that won’t take over your yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a location in your yard with full sun and well-drained soil. Add 3 to 4 inches of compost to the soil and work it in to a depth of 10 to 12 inches.

    • 2

Plant your "Howdy Doody" pumpkin seeds outdoors when the last spring frost has passed and the soil is at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Mound the soil into hills about 5 to 6 inches tall. Place four to five seeds into each hill at a depth of 1 inch. Cover the seeds with soil. Space each hill 4 to 8 feet apart.

    • 4

Water the soil for five minutes until it’s moist. Add mulch around the hills about 1 to 2 inches deep. Add 1 to 2 inches of water to the pumpkins per week during dry spells.

    • 5

Harvest your "Howdy Doody" pumpkins in the fall when they are ripe. The pumpkin will have a firm rind and a deep orange color when it’s ready to be picked. Cut the fruit from the vine before the frost sets in.
