Erect a pea fence for Little Marvel peas in a sunny location that receives six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. Secure metal or wooden stakes into the ground spaced 4 to 6 feet apart along the garden row. Attach chicken wire or garden fencing to the stakes with staples or fence ties, so that the bottom of the fence is 2 to 4 inches from the ground.
Mark furrows for the peas 2 to 4 inches from each side of the fence with the blade of the hoe or a row marker. Spread 5-10-10 fertilizer along the rows following the recommended application rate on the container. Work the fertilizer in well with the existing soil. Direct contact with granular fertilizer will burn the pea seed and inhibit germination.
Sow the pea seeds to a depth of 1 to 2 inches, spaced 1 inch apart in rows. Cover with soil and firm the soil down firmly with the back of the hoe. Peas that are not covered well or firmed down tend to surface as soon as it rains.
Water to keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy, to a depth of 2 inches. Keep the soil moist until seedlings emerge in 7 to 10 days. According to Cornell University, peas germinate at soil temperatures between 40 and 80 degrees, with optimal germination occurring at 75 degrees.
Mulch peas with grass clippings to keep the roots cool and to prevent weeds. Mulch also helps to hold in moisture.
Harvest Little Marvel when the pods are plump and firm, approximately 62 days from planting. Days to maturity are typically calculated under ideal conditions, but are only an estimate.
