How to Nick a Gourd Seed Before Planting

Nicking or scarifying seeds allows moisture to enter the seed, and it often speeds germination for seeds with thick or tough seed coats. Although not all gourds require scarification, the University of Georgia Extension recommends scarification of luffa seeds before planting. Other gourd seeds with tough seed coats may benefit from the practice as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Nick the seed coat with a fingernail file or sandpaper by rubbing the sides of the seeds until the seed coat thins and a tiny hole forms. Use caution not to remove too much of the seed coat. A tiny pinhole allows water to enter.

    • 2

Place the seeds in a jar or bowl of lukewarm water. Allow the seeds to set over night. The seed coats soften further, taking in the moisture needed for germination.

    • 3

Plant the seeds in soil with a temperature of 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the soil moist until the seedlings emerge in five to 10 days.
