How to Grow Miniature Cucumbers in Hanging Pots

If you are renting or living in an apartment, you probably think that you can’t have fresh cucumbers to eat. Well you can grow cucumbers if you choose a miniature variety and grow them in a hanging basket. Cucumbers are warm-weather plants, so do not grow them outdoors until all danger of frost is past. You can get a jump-start on the season by starting the seeds indoors a month before the last expected frost.

Things You'll Need

  • 1-gallon hanging pot
  • Potting soil
  • Slow-release fertilizer

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a 1-gallon hanging basket with potting soil or compost. You need one basket for each miniature cucumber plant you wish to grow.

    • 2

Place one to two seeds in the center of the basket. With your finger, push the seed into the soil a 1/ 2 inch deep. Cover the seed with potting soil and firm the soil gently over the seeds.

    • 3

Place the pot in a bright window if you are starting them indoors early. Water the soil in the pot thoroughly. If you are going to hang the pot outdoors, choose a sunny location for your pot. Check the soil daily for moisture. The soil needs to remain moist, but not soggy or the seeds will rot. It takes 6 to 8 days for the seeds to germinate. After the seeds germinate, remove the weaker plant from the pot. Continue to keep the soil moist. Do not allow the soil to dry out or the fruit will be bitter.

    • 4

Hang the basket on a hook in a sunny location when all danger of frost is past and the temperature remains above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The hook has to be in a secure location. Potting soil is heavy when watered and it will be heavier when fruit is forming.

    • 5

Inspect the cucumber plants for pests, like the cucumber beetle. If you notice any bugs, spray the miniature cucumber plants with an organic pest-control that is safe for cucumbers. Read and follow label directions for proper amounts.

    • 6

Feed the cucumbers with liquid or a granular slow-release fertilizer every other week. Mix and apply according to label directions.

    • 7

Harvest the cucumbers when they are the right size according to the variety you are growing. Pick the cucumbers often for the best flavor and to encourage more fruit to set on. Fruit that turns yellow means they are over-ripe. Remove them from the plant and toss them away.
