How to Grow Garden Berry Litchi Tomatoes

Litchi tomatoes, or Morelle de Balbis, are not true tomatoes but tomato cousins. These thorny shrubs hail from South America and belong to both tomato and potato families as a variety of nightshade. Plants grow to 4 to 5 feet in height, with fluffy white flowers, thorny stems and dark green foliage. They produce small, dark red berries with yellow flesh and tart, sour flavors. Grow these decorative plants in the outdoor garden according to standard tomato-growing guidelines.

Instructions

    • 1

Start litchi tomatoes in mid-spring when frost lifts and temperatures warm. These plants tolerate frost once they're established but need warm, frost-free starts. Choose garden locations where the plants will get full sunshine all day, quick year-round drainage and good air movement. Allot at least 2 feet of space to each plant.

    • 2

Amend the planting bed for garden litchi tomatoes. Till the topsoil to a depth of 8 inches and incorporate 3 to 4 inches of rich organic compost or leaf mold. Add 6-24-24 or 8-32-16 starter fertilizer for best root development. Water the soil to dissolve the fertilizer.

    • 3

Plant litchi tomato seeds or seedlings with 2 to 3 feet of space in the row and 4 to 5 feet of space between rows. Put 2 inches of organic mulch on the soil between the plants for moisture and weed protection. Maintain this mulch layer throughout the season.

    • 4

Put a vegetable cage over each litchi tomato seedling for support. Use soft cord ties to tie the litchi tomato stems up to the cage for training. These plants require support similar to that of standard tomatoes.

    • 5

Put the litchi tomatoes on a schedule of 2 inches of water every week, and weed the plot once or twice a month. Litchi tomatoes don't produce good fruit harvests in dry soil or with competition from weeds.

    • 6

Fertilizer the litchi tomato plants at mid-season with a standard balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 or 12-12-12. Turn the fertilizer into the soil around the plants, then water with the standard amount. Water plants immediately after feeding to keep the fertilizer granules from burning tender plant matter.
