Can You Revive a Wilted Cabbage Plant?

Cabbage plants growing in a garden prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and autumn. Many cabbage varieties will even continue to thrive when the temperature dips below freezing. If your cabbage plant begins showing indications of stress or disease by wilting, you may be able to revive it with special care and attention to growing conditions. If your cabbage has an insect infestation or fungal disease, however, you may not succeed in saving the plant.

  Water the cabbage plant regularly with a garden hose or watering can to provide enough moisture for head formation. Strive to keep the soil around the cabbage plant evenly moist without allowing it to dry out at any time.

  Give the cabbage plant extra water at the base of the plant to revive it if you notice wilting. Pour the water onto the soil around the plant until the soil appears saturated with water.

  Assess the plant the day after providing extra water. The cabbage plant should show signs of revival if the reason for the wilting was a lack of moisture.

  Mix the water-soluble fertilizer with water according to package recommendations. Pour the fertilizer carefully over the soil to feed the cabbage plants. Cabbage plants require fertilizing about once every three weeks during the growing season.

  Remove the cabbage plant from the garden if it continues to wilt despite watering and fertilizing. In this situation, you may have an insect infestation or a fungal disease attacking your cabbage plant. In either case, removing the infected plant may prevent the issue from spreading to other plants in your garden. Place the cabbage plant in a trash bag, seal the bag and discard it. Do not compost the cabbage plant. You may infect your compost with a fungus or an insect.
