How to Build a Vegetable Cage

A vegetable cage is a support that keeps your vegetable plants upright. Some garden plants, such as tomatoes, need the support because their fruits are too heavy for the stems to hold. Other plants, such as some squash or beans, are vining and need the support to keep their fruits off the ground where they will rot. The cages also protect the plants from wind damage. You can make your own vegetable cage from concrete wire available at a local hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a roll of concrete reinforcing wire into a 4-foot section using bolt cutters. Make the cuts in between two vertical wires, so a section of horizontal wire remains.

    • 2

Push a metal pipe over the bottom horizontal wire that juts out past the last vertical wire in the cut section. Pull the pipe back to bend the horizontal wire into a hook. Repeat with the top horizontal wire.

    • 3

Roll the two ends of the reinforcing wire together, creating a cylinder. Push the two hooks you created over the first vertical wire you come to when you make the cylinder.

    • 4

Stand the cage upright. Press it into the soil over the vegetable you want to support.
