How to Grow a Cucumber in a Bottle

Genies in a bottle or messages in a bottle have always fascinated people due to their element of surprise. While maybe not as fascinating, large cucumbers inside a bottle certainly offer the unexpected. Ideal for children's gardening projects or for display at markets and fairs, a cucumber in a bottle is a novel way to display your gardening skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry a bottle with a narrow mouth. A 2-liter bottle will work, but if you have intentions of pickling the cucumber for display, a glass bottle is a must.

    • 2

Slip a small baby cucumber, with the vine attached, inside the bottle. Lay the bottle on its side in the garden soil.

    • 3

Mound soil around the sides of the bottle to secure it in one place and to prevent rolling. The bottle should remain stabilized in one position.

    • 4

Shade the bottle with cucumber foliage to prevent it from overheating in the summer sun. A healthy cucumber patch provides ample foliage for shading the bottle.

    • 5

Allow the cucumber to grow inside the bottle until it reaches the desired size. The size of the cucumber at maturity depends on the cucumber variety.

    • 6

Harvest the cucumber when it is plump and green, by clipping the vine as close to the bottom of the cucumber as possible. Display the cucumber in a bottle at fairs or agricultural shows. The cucumber will retain its freshness for several days.
