How to Germinate Mung Beans in a Plastic Cup

Mung beans are commonly germinated for use as fresh bean sprouts, but they can also be planted in the garden and dried after harvesting or cooked in the same manner as other beans. The seeds germinate rapidly and with little fuss, making them a good choice for teaching children about seed germination. Mung bean seeds can be sown in plastic cups, where they will sprout within three to five days, if provided with ideal growing conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a sharp nail to poke two or three holes in the bottom of a plastic cup. This allows excess water to escape and reduces the risk of root rot.

    • 2

Fill the cup three-fourths of the way with lightweight potting soil.

    • 3

Sow one or two mung bean seeds in the cup and cover them with 1 inch of potting soil.

    • 4

Water until the soil feels moist.

    • 5

Put a clear plastic bag over the cup and stretch a rubber band over the bag to hold it in place.

    • 6

Place the cup in a location that receives abundant sunlight.

    • 7

Add moisture only if the surface of the potting soil dries out completely. Remove the plastic bag after the seedlings emerge.
