How to Make a Cherry Tomato Trellis

While cherry tomato fruit is much smaller than a traditional tomato, the plant still climbs up to 10 feet and will do better when it has a trellis to climb. It also keeps the fruit from touching the ground and possibly rotting and frees up garden space.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Livestock wire
  • Steel T-posts
  • Shovel
  • Scrap heavy-gauge wire
  • Needle-nose pliers or crimpers
  • Cotton or T-shirt scraps

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space you want the trellis to take up. Write down height and width measurements.

    • 2

Purchase a panel of heavy-gauge wire or livestock panel for a heavy-duty trellis. Purchase a steel T-post for every 4 to 6 feet of paneling you'll need.

    • 3

Dig a hole in the ground about 2 feet deep. Insert a T-post and back-fill the hole, compacting the soil well for a secure support.

    • 4

Measure 4 to 6 feet from that post, or to where you want the trellis to end, if the space measures less than 4 feet. Dig another hole and insert another T-post as before. Repeat this step until you have T-posts to support the entire length of your trleis.

    • 5

Unroll and attach the wire or livestock panel using scraps of heavy-gauge wire and wrapping several of them around each post and the paneling. Use needle-nose pliers or crimpers to twist and secure the scraps.

    • 6

Tie your cherry tomato plants to the trellis as they grow, using soft cotton or old T-shirts to avoid injury. Weave the plants through the paneling for best support.
