Press 6- to 7-foot long sections of bamboo into the ground to a depth of about 8 inches along one side of the row where you will plant the peas, using your body weight. Space the bamboo poles about 3 feet apart.
Place another row of bamboo poles 12 inches from the first row, on the other side of the row of peas. Again, press the poles 6 inches into the soil. Tamp the soil around the base of the bamboo poles with the sole of your shoe.
Bring together the tops of the first two poles on either side of the row. Place a section of bamboo over the intersection, and have a helper hold the other end of the pole. Lash the poles together with some twine. Bring the next two poles together in the same way, and lower the same bamboo pole between them to keep them apart.
Continue crossing the poles and wrapping the intersections until you finish the framework for your pea trellis.
Tie off 6-foot sections of twine to the cross sections of bamboo, and drop them down to the plants. Place the twine every 6 inches. Alternatively, you can hang nylon mesh by tying it to the bamboo cross sections.
