Fill a pot with all-purpose potting soil, leaving 1 to 3 inches of space between the top of the container and the soil. If you are growing beans that need support, such as pole beans, insert one tomato stake or similar-type pole for every 6 inches of soil surface area.
Plant beans about 1 inch deep, planting about eight or nine plants per square foot, spaced about 3 inches apart. For beans that need support, plant three beans around each pole.
Water the beans in with 1 inch of water.
Cover the soil with 2 inches of mulch, such as wood chips, especially if you are placing the pot outdoors where temperatures are hot and the soil is likely to dry out quickly. Mulch also helps protects the beans during cold nights.
Place the pot in the sun. In your home, in a sunroom, under a skylight or next to a south-facing window usually works well.
Feed the beans once per month with an all-purpose fertilizer until harvest. If you fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer, follow the schedule on the packaging. Water the beans after fertilizing them. Also, water the beans whenever the soil dries out 3 inches beneath the soil line.
