Instructions

    • 1

Select the type of mushroom you wish to grow. White button mushrooms are ideal for growing in a storage bin.

    • 2

Make up your mushroom compost mixture. A compost of animal manure such as that from a cow, chicken or horse is ideal, mixed with shredded straw, leaves or grass clippings. To get started sooner, find a well-aged compost mixture available for the taking from a local farmer or bagged at a garden center.

    • 3

Fill your storage bins about half full with the compost mixture.

    • 4

Mist your mushroom spawn over the top of the compost mixture or inject it just under the surface if you are using a spore syringe. Spore syringes and spawn can be purchased online or at some garden centers.

    • 5

Place the storage bins in a warm area where the temperature will remain around 70 degrees. Leave the bins in this environment for about 3 weeks until the spores can become rooted.

    • 6

Mist the compost with water when it becomes dry.

    • 7

Move the bins to an area where they can maintain a temperature between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. A basement or shed may work well.

    • 8

Check the bins periodically for growth. White button mushrooms start to appear about a month after moving to a cooler climate.
