How to Grow Raisin Tomatoes

Raisin tomatoes, trademarked under the name Tomaccio, are a type of small tomatoes that were developed to eat as a dry snack, similar to raisins. The fruits are picked when ripe and dried, either in a dehydrator or on the vine. Drying the tomatoes gives them an intense kick of flavor that is a vibrant addition to salads, pastas and omelets, as well as making them a tasty snack on their own. A relatively new variety of tomato, the variety's commercial developer C. Raker & Sons sold the Tomaccio in America for the first time in spring 2010.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the hole. Use a shovel to dig a hole deep enough to plant the tomato plant are about 2 inches lower than they were in the pot.

    • 2

Place the raisin tomato plant into the hole and refill the hole so the plant is supported.

    • 3

Water the plant to help the soil settle into place around the plant. Use a commercial fertilizer solution to water the plants for best growth. You may need to add additional soil around the plant after watering.

    • 4

Secure a bamboo pole or other stake to support the raisin tomato plant. These plants grow as vines. Staking them keeps them from lying on the ground, where they can get wet and rot.

    • 5

Tie the Tomaccio to the stake with twine. As the plant grows, you will need to check the ties to make sure they are secure.

    • 6

Pinch off any suckers, which are side shoots that grow where the main stem and branches meet, off the vine as they form. For best production, the raisin tomato should have one central vine.

    • 7

Harvest the tomatoes as soon as they turn red. If you want to let them dry on the vine, cut each cluster off with a sharp pair of scissors and set them out in the sun or in a sunny windowsill.
