How to Grow a Carrot by Sticking a Store Bought Carrot Into the Soil

When you insert a store-bought carrot into garden soil or potting soil, it will grow more of the top, lacy foliage, but the edible root will not develop into another carrot. However, by planting a carrot top, you can make an attractive houseplant. Planting a carrot top can be a fun learning experience for children as well. Choose any kind of carrot you find at the supermarket or farmers market. If the top greenery has been clipped off, your carrot will respond quickly by producing more foliage.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut all but 2 inches off the carrot, leaving a 2-inch stub below the upper foliage.

    • 2

Snip off the fern-like greenery above the carrot root if your carrot has any. Do not cut into the orange root. Leave about 1/2 inch of foliage at the top of the root.

    • 3

Lay down 1 inch of sand or pebbles in a bowl. Use a bowl that has no drainage hole.

    • 4

Force your cut carrot into the center of the sand or pebbles in your bowl. If the carrot is not stable, add a little more sand or pebbles.

    • 5

Pour warm water into your bowl, covering the sand or pebbles.

    • 6

Place your potted carrot top in a sunny spot. More foliage will soon begin to grow from the top of the root.
