A tulip is described as a showy flower because of its striking feature. It has six large petals that come in variety of colors such as yellow, pink, white, violet, red, green, orange, and blue.
The tulip has long been cultivated in Turkey because of its significance in Turkish art and culture. Wearing a tulip in one's turban is part of the Turkish tradition that most likely led the Europeans to name the flower after the Turkish word for turban, "tulbend".
There are three types of tulips based on their blooming season: (1) early season flowering tulips, which bloom between March and early April; (2) mid season flowering tulips, which bloom between late April and early May; and (3) late season flowering tulips, which bloom in late May.
Tulips grow wild in Central Asia but they are now also being cultivated throughout the world.
At one point during the 17th century, tulips became wildly popular in Europe, especially in Holland. Because they became so expensive, many people sold off their fortunes.
