White Sweet Corn Varieties

Sweet corn is a popular summer vegetable native to the United States and is classified as white, yellow or bicolor according to the color of the kernel and level of sugar. Choosing the right corn variety is a matter of personal preference. As per the University of Missouri Extension site, sweet corn seeds do not store well and it is best to use fresh seeds for new crop every year. White sweet corn comes in a number of different varieties and germinates best in soil temperature of 55 degrees or warmer.
  1. Pearl White

    • Pearl white is a sweet white corn variety that is ready for harvest in about 75 days after planting. Pearl white is among the mid season varieties that mature in 70 to 80 days. The corn ear size is from 7 to 8 inches. Pearl white is a good white sweet corn variety for growing in the northern regions as it displays a good tolerance for cooler soil temperatures. The corn is also drought tolerant and is easy to harvest given its ease in snapping.

    Platinum Lady

    • Platinum lady white sweet corn takes a little longer to mature than pearl white and is ready for harvest in about 86 days from planting. Platinum lady is among the late season corn varieties that take 80 or more days to mature from time of planting. Corn ears grow to a full length of about 8 1/2 inches and are favored for their very delicate taste. Platinum lady kernels are very tender and overall corn grows into slender and elegant form.

    Silver Queen

    • Among sweet white corn varieties cited by the University of Illinois Extension, silver queen sweet white corn has the longest maturation time, ready for harvest in 92 days after planting. Silver queen is also a late season corn variety that takes over 80 days for maturation. The corn ears are longer, reaching a full length of 8 to 9 inches. Silver queen sweet white corn is considered a good standard in high quality white corn. The variety has dark green, flat foliage and attractive ear form. Silver queen displays a good resistance to a number of corn diseases including Helminthosporium and bacterial wilt.
