DIY Spiral Wire Tomato Cage

A spiral tomato cage is a piece of garden equipment that provides support to tomato plants. As the plants fruit, they can become top heavy or lopsided, and will eventually flop over onto the soil. This leads to fruit rot. Unlike a chicken wire cage, a spiral cage loops around the tomato plant, giving it support while allowing you to pick the fruit without having to move the cage.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a 4 foot garden stake into the soil at a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Place it 3 to 4 inches to the side of the tomato seedling.

    • 2

Clamp the end of a piece of artist's flexible curve to the top of the stake. Flexible curve is a piece of thick wire encased in plastic. It will bend to any shape and will hold the shape.

    • 3

Twist the flexible curve into a spiral that twists around the length of the stake. The loops should be at least 2 feet in diameter to make enough room for the tomato plant. Leave 6 to 8 inches between each loop.

    • 4

Loop the last spiral around the outside of the tomato seedling. Insert a tent stake into the ground next to the last spiral, to secure it to the soil.
