What Size Pot for Roma Tomatoes?

Container growing is a great way to produce a crop of Roma tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) even if you don't have a lot of garden space, but before you start planting, make sure you are using a large enough container. You can use variety of container types, ranging from the 5-gallon-bucket to the more attractive terra-cotta pot or half-barrel. Tomatoes are annuals suitable for all growing zones.
  1. Container Size

    • A 5-gallon planter is the minimum container size to grow Roma tomatoes successfully. If you have planters lying around, but don't know the capacity, select pots based on measurements. Use pots that are a minimum of 12 inches in diameter and 12 inches deep. A larger pot will increase the area for root growth, so if you have space, consider using a 15- to 24-inch planter for your Roma tomato plant.

    Types of Containers

    • A cost-effective way to get started growing Roma tomatoes is by using an old 5-gallon bucket. For a more attractive option, you can use glazed or unglazed ceramic pots or plastic planters. A half-barrel also works well for growing Roma tomatoes. Half-barrel planters generally have a diameter of about 26 inches. Natural materials, like unglazed ceramic and wood, allow water to evaporate quicker than plastic and will require more water to keep the soil moist.

    Drainage

    • Drainage is critical for growing most plants, and Roma tomatoes are no exception. If you use a 5-gallon bucket, drill one or more 3/4- to 1-inch diameter holes in the bottom. Most planters come with drainage holes, but if they don't, make sure to drill holes in the bottom. Without adequate drainage, excess water will build up around the roots, causing root rot problems. Before adding potting soil, place a piece of broken pottery, or a 1 to 2-inch-deep layer of pebbles over the drainage holes. This will keep them from getting clogged and stop soil from leaking out.

    Potting Soil and Planting

    • A good quality, standard potting soil works well for growing Roma tomatoes in containers. Potting soil is designed to drain well, provide support and allow air circulation around the roots. Plant Roma tomatoes so that the bottom one-third of the stem is below the soil line. Water the soil right after planting, and put a tomato cage in place over the seedling. Roma tomatoes grow 4 to 6 feet tall and will need support as they mature. Grow Roma tomatoes in a sunny spot with at least six hours or more of full sun a day.
