The Most Productive Hybrid Tomatoes

There are more than 2,000 tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) varieties available for planting in home gardens. Unlike heirloom varieties, tomatoes classified as hybrids were developed after 1950 and were crossed between different varieties for better disease resistance and higher yields. Tomato plants may be determinate or indeterminate. Determinate plants produce their entire crop at once. Indeterminate plants produce less fruit at once over a longer period of time. Tomatoes grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 2 through 10.
  1. Cherry and Grape Tomatoes

    • Preferred for use in salad, cherry and grape hybrid tomatoes produce small round or oblong tomatoes with high sugar content. Cherry tomatoes have thinner flesh than grape tomatoes. Determinate variety "FL 91" (Solanum lycopersicum "FL 91") produces large crops of oblong, firm cherry tomatoes with green shoulders in mid-season. "Red Pearl" (Solanum lycopersicum "Red Pearl"), an indeterminate variety, produces large quantities of red grape tomatoes. This variety was a "top pick" in Penn State Agriculture Extension 2011 tomato trial for its high production, red color and resistance to cracking.

    Slicers

    • Grow red or yellow slicer hybrid tomatoes for fresh eating and slicing for sandwiches. Hybrid slicers produce up to 15 tomatoes per plant and are most flavorful when left to ripen on the vine. An indeterminate variety, "Brandyboy" (Solanum lycopersicum "Brandyboy") has the same excellent flavor as the heirloom "Brandywine," but produces more tomatoes. The plant produces large, pink, flavorful tomatoes. "BHN 189" (Solanum lycopersicum "BHN 189") produces round, red tomatoes and produces 10 days earlier than main season tomato plants. A determinate variety, "BHN 189" produces 6- to 10-ounce, flavorful fruit. "Carolina Gold" (Solanum lycopersicum "Carolina Gold"), a yellow slicing variety, produces large numbers of mild-flavored fruit.

    Patio or Containers

    • Hybrid varieties suitable for patio and container growth include "Bush early girl" (Solanum lycopersicum "Bush early girl") slicer, "Bushsteak" (Solanum lycopersicum "Bushsteak") slicer, and "Sweet N Neat" (Solanum lycopersicum "Sweet N Neat") cherry. "Bushsteak" produces heavy crops of large, 8- to 12-ounce, fruit about a week later in the season than "Bush early girl," which produces a large number of 6-ounce, flavorful fruit very early in the growing season. "Sweet N Neat" produces large quantities of red, scarlet and yellow cherry tomatoes on compact plants. These plants grow in pots as small as 8 inches wide.

    Paste

    • Paste tomatoes, used for canning and sauces, are productive plants that grow on compact plants. "Viva Italia" (Solanum lycopersicum "Viva Italia") produces large quantities of 3-ounce meaty, flavorful fruit. It is a determinate variety. The productive, indeterminate variety, "Dona" (Solanum lycopersicum "Dona"), produces meaty tomatoes recommended from canning and use in salsa. "Dona" is a French hybrid. "Big Mama" (Solanum lycopersicum "Big Mama"), a hybrid paste tomato produces 8- to10-ounce, flavorful, meaty tomatoes. The plant is highly productive, setting up to 50 fruits per plant.
