How to Grow Big Boy Tomatoes in Pots

The Big Boy is large, bright red, smooth-skinned and has sweet flesh. The plant is an indeterminate hybrid with a bushy growing habit and a high resistance to disease. Big Boys grow successfully in pots and containers and do well on decks and patios, making them a good choice for gardeners with limited space. Container garden benefits include convenience, fewer weeds and pests, and easier access for people with disabilities.

Things You'll Need

  • 5-gallon container with drainage holes
  • Gravel
  • Organic potting soil for vegetables
  • Drip tray
  • Organic fertilizer formulated for vegetables
  • Wire tomato cage

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 2 inches of gravel into the bottom of the container. Fill the container with potting soil. Water lightly. Soil should be damp, but not dripping.

    • 2

Water the tomato plant thoroughly. Remove the plant from its container, being careful not to damage the roots. Loosen the soil gently around the roots if the plant is root-bound. Dig a hole in the soil 1/2 inch deeper and wider than the root ball of the plant. Set the plant into the hole and backfill with soil, pressing gently until the plant is supported. Place the pot on the drip tray in a location that receives full sun. Water lightly.

    • 3

Water the plant frequently when the top 2 inches of soil become dry. Water until the soil is damp, but not dripping. Apply water to the base of the plant to avoid damaging the leaves. Water the plant twice daily during hot months.

    • 4

Fertilize weekly with a liquid organic fertilizer made specifically for tomatoes. Mix and apply the fertilizer according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 5

Cover the plant with a wire tomato cage when it begins to bush and flowers begin blooming. Big Boys are known for their large fruit, and without proper support the tomatoes will break the vines.
