The Big Boy tomato plant is a hybrid that entered the market in 1949 and has been the longest lasting of its kind because of its large, flavorful fruit and resistance to disease. Given the correct care, it can grow up to 10 feet.
Big Boy is an F1 Hybrid, developed by Dr. Oved Shifriss, a vegetable breeder for the W. Atlee Burpee & Co. Burpee also has introduced a smaller version of the Big Boy, the Bush Big Boy, which grows only 3 to 4 feet. Look carefully to see which plant you have.
Both Big Boy hybrids have a bushing habit. Because the Big Boy vines well, staking it and helping it climb can produce a taller plant. Big Boy grows tallest with at least eight hours of full sun per day and watering 6 inches into the soil and roots every two days. Less sun or inadequate watering will produce a smaller plant. Fertilizing also contributes to the height. Big Boy tends to reach its greatest heights in Zones 6 and 7.
If you plan to put Big Boy tomatoes in your garden, make sure you don't have any height constrictions. Plant Big Boy tomatoes near a tall fence that will give them a good support so they can reach their full potential.
