How to Trelis Tomatoes

Tomatoes need a lot of room as they grow. They also need good circulation and to be up off the ground in order for their fruit to grow without rotting or splitting. Gardeners have tried many tricks to grow tomatoes upright, and have had luck using a tomato trellis. The tomato trellis is a row of strings or wire that the tomato plants are attached to. This allows the tomato plants to grow as high as required, and improves ventilation and allows the sun to reach all parts of the plant. This works best on tomatoes that are planted in a row.

Things You'll Need

  • 9-foot stakes
  • Spool of 14 gauge utility wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Twine or plastic clips
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Pound 9-foot stakes into the ground every 4 or 5 feet so they are buried 3 feet deep.

    • 2

Unwind some 14 gauge wire and wrap the end around the first stake so it is tightly secured and 1 foot off the ground. Walk down the row of stakes and wrap the wire around each stake to secure it until the wire stretches across the row of tomato plants.

    • 3

Use twine or a plastic clip to loosely clip the tomato plants to the wire.

    • 4

Add a new strand of wire every foot as the plant grows. Attach the plant to the new wire with string or clips. The plants will need a new line of wire every three to four weeks, depending on how fast they grow.
