According to the University of Missouri, tomatoes are the most popular American garden crop. Healthy plants may begin producing their juicy fruit in just 45 days. While there are different varieties, including yellow and red, most of these fruits turn red when they are ripe. If you have a bumper crop of unripe tomatoes, you can hasten the ripening process with a few home methods. For the best results, you should allow tomatoes to ripen on the vine.
Place the tomatoes in a large, clean cardboard box. Do not stack the tomatoes; place them one layer deep. Stacking them may cause them to bruise or rot.
Cover the tomatoes loosely with sheets of newspaper. Place the box out of direct sunlight but in a warm area in an out-of-the-way place. If you have children or pets, place the box out of their reach.
Check the tomatoes every day until they reach the level of ripeness that you desire. Rotate the tomatoes daily to ensure more even ripening.
