Vinca Companion Plants

Vincas, or periwinkles, are natives of Europe, Central Asia and Northern Africa and are a rapid growing, evergreen, perennial ground cover with flowers in shades of blue, purple, red, white, pink and rose. There are nearly a dozen different varieties of vinca with the most common being Vinca minor and Vince major. The trailing plants reach a mature height of about 12 inches with a length of up to 6 feet. Numerous plants can serve as companion plants with vincas.
  1. Red Geraniums

    • The Reader's Digest Association's "Care Free Plants" recommends vinca as a companion planting with red geraniums. The lighter flowers of the vinca blend in with the brighter red of the geraniums. Geraniums are hardy plants that adapt well to nearly all soil types, providing color in the garden well into frost. Plant geraniums in areas of sun in spring after the last frost. Geranium flowers come in a number of colors. Interplant vincas with geranium plants in beds or in pots as the trailing vinca will give a good effect flowing over the planter edges.

    Daffodils

    • Daffodils are a good companion planting with vincas, according to "Alabama & Mississippi Gardener's Guide." The evergreen vincas help to keep the flower bed looking colorful even after the daffodil bulbs go dormant in fall and winter. Daffodils come in tall- and low-growing varieties and the trumpet-shaped flowers bloom in a range of colors. The taller cultivars and the unique strapping, long foliage of the daffodil plants especially complement the low growing vincas.

    Tall Salvia

    • The Wilson Bros Nursery suggests a number of companion plantings to use with vincas such as tall salvia. Tall salvia (Salvia splendens) is a tall-growing salvia variety that blooms with bright colored flowers. Though salvia comes in short and tall varieties, the taller give the best effect rising from the mound of low-growing vinca. Salvia splendens blooms from the middle of June to the first frost and grows to a mature height of up to 1 1/2 feet.
