Heath Benefits of Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds provide a basic, quick and nutritious snack when eaten whole. They are also pressed to extract oil, which you can use as a cooking oil. Most sunflower seeds come from Russia, Argentina and the United States.
  1. Uses

    • Three types of sunflower oil come from sunflower seeds, according to the National Sunflower Association: linoleic, high oleic and NuSun. Linoleic is the sunflower oil found at supermarkets. Manufacturers use high oleic oil in processed foods. NuSun is a hybrid oil that works well in commercial deep fryers. You can eat raw sunflower seeds or you can roast them. The University of Illinois Extension website suggests first boiling raw seeds in salted water, then drying them overnight.
