The Largest Sunflower Seeds

Sunflowers will always be grown as long as there are children and competitions! Just the word sunflower conjures up a scene of tall plants with great yellow plate-sized faces, following the sun as it moves. For many gardeners, sunflowers simply form part of the summer display, but for others sunflowers present an opportunity for a contest: who can grow the largest? Of course, success depends on the variety of seed chosen; many are hybrid cultivars, designed to be uniform and consistent in growth and size.
  1. Mammoth

    • This Mammoth sunflower grows a 12-inch flower at the top of a 12-foot stem. This large yellow flower also has a yellow center, creating a very sunny-looking plant. The variety grows rapidly from seed and is a heavy cropper and produces edible seeds to dry and leave out for birds or save as snacks. Plants will bloom for approximately 5 weeks.

    Mammoth Russian

    • The Mammoth Russian grows a particularly large head of bright yellow petals with a yellow center -- a perfect variety to grow for competitions. The height can reach 12 feet on sturdy stalks. Seeds are large and edible, a great variety to grow for snacks. The plants grow rapidly and the flowers bloom for approximately 5 weeks.

    American Giants

    • A tall-growing sunflower variety, American Giants reach between 12 to 14 feet. Their giant plate-shaped flowers can reach 12 inches wide. When planted along a fence or wall, they create a spectacular explosion of color once they mature. As with all sunflowers, they require a full sun position for maximum results.

    Kong Hybrid

    • The Kong variety is capable of reaching a height of 14 feet. Sitting atop the sturdy stem will be a 10-inch round golden flower. Plants have plenty of foliage so are perfect as hedging. The Kong grows rapidly and will bloom for 6 weeks during summer.

    Heirloom Titan

    • This variety of Mammoth sunflower can grow up to 14 feet. It can easily be grown from seed, planted in a full sun location around April to June time. The plant blooms in summer with large golden petals around a dark brown center.

    Sunzilla

    • Perhaps the tallest sunflower variety available, Sunzilla also has a remarkably sturdy stem, particularly important for tall sunflowers. The Sunzilla is easy to propagate from seed and can grow to around 16 feet tall. At the top of the stem, enormous golden flowers bloom throughout the summer. To grow larger heads, plants need to be spaced so that they have plenty of room as they grow.
